In
vitro fertilization, also known as IVF or "test tube baby" was one
of the greatest achievements in the treatment of infertility. It is reserved for couples who have tried
other forms of treatment or for those who have lack of access to a
pregnancy by natural means. Several eggs are removed from the ovary after
ovulation induction with drugs. The removal of these eggs is done through the vagina guided by
transvaginal ultrasound. These eggs are fertilized with the sperm of her husband. (Or a donor
if the husband has no ability to produce sperm) An important variation of this technique is
ICSI
when only one sperm is injected into the egg using
micromanipulation.
