Sinusitis is an inflammation of the mucous membranes of the sinuses, the
region formed by the skull bone cavities around the nose, cheeks and eyes.
Its causes may be related to the flu, allergy, nasal septum deviation and
bad weather. There are several ways to prevent sinusitis, such as ensuring a
good nasal function, resulting in proper drainage of the sinuses.
Prophylactic measures in relation to allergies also work.
Sinusitis can be divided into acute and chronic. The first usually appears
severe headache in the sinus more committed, nasal obstruction, presence of
yellow or green discharge, fever, tiredness, runny nose, cough, muscle aches
and loss of appetite. In case of chronic sinusitis, the symptoms are the
same, but with varying intensity. The cough occurs more at night and
increases in intensity when the person lies down.
The diagnosis and treatment should be performed by
a physician, looking at the clinical history, associated with radiological
examinations. The treatment is specific to each type of sinusitis. In cases
of infectious sinusitis antibiotics should be used, nasal decongestant, nasal wash
and antipyretics. In case of allergy the treatment should consist in antihistamines, decongestants,
and nasal wash with saline solution.
In cases of flu, colds and allergic
processes, it is recommended to drink at least two litters of water per
day, and drip two to three drops of saline solution in the nostrils several times a
day.
