Chromosomes and infertility
Chromosomes and
Infertility
Infertility can arise in situations in which an abnormal
number of sex chromosomes. For example, the lack of an X chromosome results
in a condition known as Turner syndrome, which affects only females.
Approximately one in 3,000 girls are born with this syndrome. The main
features include short stature, absence or very delayed development of
secondary sexual characteristics. These people are undoubtedly female in
appearance and identity, but will never experience the development of female
sexual characteristics.
Menstruation may be induced by estrogen drugs, but this syndrome makes a
woman infertile.
